Which Sources Do AI Engines Cite? Study of 18,000 Answers
We analysed 248,000 sources cited in 18,007 AI answers across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and Copilot. 77% came from third-party sites; only 3% from the brand's own site.

Which sources do AI engines cite most?
Key takeaways
- 76.8% of the sources AI engines cite are third-party company sites; only 3.1% are the brand's own site.
- An average AI answer cites 13.8 sources.
- LinkedIn, YouTube and Reddit were cited for more brands than any other domains.
- To be cited, you need to be on other people's pages, not just your own.
AI engines mostly cite other people's websites. In 18,007 AI answers Yozigo tracked between 5 and 20 September 2026, 76.8% of the 247,724 cited sources were third-party company sites. The brand's own website made up just 3.1%, competitors' sites 4.2%, and social media 5.7%.
That's the single most useful fact for anyone trying to get cited. Your website matters, but it's one voice in a crowd of about 14 sources per answer. The pages that describe your category, compare vendors, or review products carry most of the weight.
What types of sources do AI answers rely on?
| Source type | Citations | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Third-party company site | 190,172 | 76.8% |
| Social media | 14,053 | 5.7% |
| Competitor site | 10,455 | 4.2% |
| Other | 9,914 | 4.0% |
| The brand's own site | 7,801 | 3.1% |
| Review platform | 5,630 | 2.3% |
| News and press | 5,303 | 2.1% |
| Knowledge hub (e.g. Wikipedia) | 4,316 | 1.7% |
| Business listing | 80 | 0.0% |
Third-party company sites dominate at 76.8% of 247,724 citations; no other type passes 6%.
Which domains get cited across the most brands?
Reddit, LinkedIn and YouTube top the list: each was cited for 14 or 15 of the 17 brands in our sample.
Some domains show up no matter what industry you're in. We counted domains cited for at least eight different brands, leaving out our customers' own sites and image thumbnails.
Reddit was cited for 15 brands (2,077 citations), LinkedIn for 14 (5,271), YouTube for 14 (3,785) and Wikipedia for 13 (379). Medium (11 brands), Quora (10), Reuters (10) and G2 (9) followed. These are platforms anyone can publish on or be listed on, which makes them the most practical targets for most teams.
We cover how to use them in why AI engines cite LinkedIn, YouTube and Reddit.
Do AI engines cite different kinds of sources?
| Engine | Third-party sites | Social platforms | YouTube | Brand's own site |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 77.1% | 2.6% | 0.2% | 3.0% |
| Perplexity | 78.4% | 5.9% | 0.2% | 1.9% |
| Gemini | 83.0% | 3.7% | 0.4% | 4.2% |
| Google AI Overviews | 66.8% | 18.7% | 9.3% | 3.7% |
| Google AI Mode | 62.1% | 20.0% | 10.0% | 7.5% |
| Microsoft Copilot | 81.9% | 1.4% | 0.1% | 5.4% |
Yes, and Google's engines stand apart. Google AI Overviews took 18.7% of its citations from social platforms and AI Mode 20.0%, mostly YouTube (9.3% and 10.0% of all their citations) and LinkedIn (4.9% and 6.9%). ChatGPT and Copilot took under 3% from social platforms.
ChatGPT leaned most on knowledge hubs such as Wikipedia (3.0% of its citations, against 0.4–1.1% elsewhere). Gemini cited Reddit more than any other engine (2.1%). Perplexity cited LinkedIn heavily (4.8%) but brands' own sites least (1.9%). So a YouTube video helps you in Google's AI features far more than in ChatGPT, and a Wikipedia entry does the opposite.
What does this mean for getting your brand cited?
Three things follow from the data. First, find the specific third-party pages AI already cites for your buyers' questions; they are your real competition. Second, get a clear, attributed line about your brand onto those pages, which is what Citation Placements is built for. Third, publish on the shared platforms AI trusts across industries: LinkedIn articles, YouTube explainers and genuine Reddit answers.
Your own site still counts. It's where AI checks facts about you, and the branded vs unbranded data shows engines cite it heavily when buyers already know your name. But for buyers who don't, third-party pages decide whether you appear.
This matches earlier research
the Princeton-led GEO study (ACM KDD 2024) found that adding sources, statistics and quotations raised visibility in generative answers by up to 40%.
How we collected this data
Yozigo runs tracked prompts every day on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Microsoft Copilot, then fetches and classifies each cited source. This study covers 18,007 answers for 17 brands across several industries, 5–20 September 2026. Domains belonging to Yozigo customers are excluded from the domain list, and no customer data is published.
Limits
17 brands is a meaningful sample but not the whole web, and source types come from automatic classification, so treat shares within a point or two as equal. Customer names and domains are never published.
Frequently Asked Questions: AI citation sources
Across all engines we track, third-party company sites made up 76.8% of citations. LinkedIn, YouTube and Reddit were cited for the most brands. ChatGPT cites more domains per answer than most engines, 9.5 on average in our data.
Sometimes. Brand-owned sites were 3.1% of all citations in our study, but engines cite them far more often when a buyer's question names the brand.
13.8 on average in 18,007 answers we analysed in September 2026, though Gemini and Copilot typically cite fewer domains than ChatGPT and Perplexity.
Get mentioned, with a clear sentence about what you do, on the third-party pages AI already cites for your buyers' questions, and publish on shared platforms like LinkedIn, YouTube and Reddit. Then track whether engines start citing you.
