Branded vs Unbranded Prompts: Is Your AI Visibility Inflated?

Why is my AI visibility score so high?

Key takeaways

  • Prompts that name your brand make visibility look far better than it is.
  • In 232,838 AI answers, brands were named in 77–97% of branded answers but only 2.4–4.8% of unbranded ones.
  • Report the two numbers separately.
  • Unbranded visibility is the number that wins new buyers.

Your score is probably high because some of your tracked prompts include your brand name. Ask ChatGPT "Is Acme good for payroll?" and it will talk about Acme. That tells you nothing about whether it recommends Acme to someone asking "best payroll software for startups".

Yozigo tracked 232,838 answers for 37 brands on six AI engines between 29 June and 27 September 2026. On branded prompts, the brand was mentioned in 77.3% (AI Overviews) to 96.5% (Copilot) of answers. On unbranded prompts, it fell to between 2.4% (AI Mode) and 4.8% (Gemini).

How big is the gap on each AI engine?

The gap is 74 to 94 percentage points on every engine, from Gemini (80.0% vs 4.8%) to Copilot (96.5% vs 2.9%).

Mention rate is the share of answers that name the tracked brand. Cited rate is the share that list the brand's own website as a source.

Why does a blended score mislead?

Because 87.3% of the answers we tracked were unbranded, yet branded answers name the brand up to 40 times more often.

A blended score averages two very different questions: "does AI know who we are?" and "does AI recommend us?". The first is almost always yes. The second is almost always the problem.

The mix you track decides the number. In our data 87.3% of answers came from unbranded prompts. A team tracking mostly branded prompts could report 60% visibility while being named in fewer than one in twenty buyer searches. Nothing is wrong with the tracking; the prompt set is doing the flattering.

The same trap exists in classic SEO, where branded keywords inflate average position. Marketers who track Share of Model face it again in AI answers.

How should you report AI visibility instead?

Report two numbers, not one: on the same 232,838 answers, the branded and unbranded mention rates differed by a factor of 16 to 40.

1. Split every metric into branded and unbranded. Yozigo's AI Visibility has a Discovery view that shows unbranded prompts only.

2. Lead with unbranded mention rate. It is the number that grows your pipeline.

3. Use branded prompts for accuracy checks. They show whether AI describes your pricing, features and positioning correctly.

4. Track position when you are named. On unbranded prompts, brands that were named sat at an average position of 1.5 to 2.5, so being named often means being near the top.

5. Compare against competitors on the same prompts. That is Share of Model.

How do you raise unbranded visibility?

By earning mentions on third-party pages, which supply 76.8% of AI citations.

Our citation study found that share across 18,007 answers. Getting named on the comparison pages, lists and reviews AI already cites moves this number more than changes to your own site. Citation Placements finds those pages for your unbranded prompts.

Frequently Asked Questions: branded vs unbranded AI visibility

A question that names your brand, such as "Is Yozigo good for agencies?". An unbranded prompt describes a need without naming anyone, such as "best AI visibility tool for agencies".

Across 203,267 unbranded answers we tracked in 2026, brands were named in 2.4% to 4.8% of them depending on the engine. Beating that in your category is a strong result.

Yes, for accuracy. They show how AI describes you. Just don't blend them into the visibility number you report to leadership.

Gemini, at 4.8% in our data, followed by ChatGPT and Perplexity at 3.5%. Perplexity cited brands' own websites most often, in 11.1% of unbranded answers.
